A stem cell is a miraculous thing. From this one cell type, embryos grow every other, from the muscle cell that will one day flex its bicep, to the neuron that will one day form its consciousness.
The problem for doctors looking to repeat this miracle, using stem cells for therapies, experiments and even organs, is they are fiendishly hard to control.
Now a British company, Bit.Bio, has received £40m of backing for technology that it claims can reliably reprogram stem cells, producing a cellular vending machine to make any human cell you desire.
